Mats are flat pieces of cardboard or other material that have an opening or "window" cut in them to reveal a part or all of a picture, and to help in isolating it from a background.

There are a great variety of mat options used today, from a simple single white mat with a spacer beneath it to more sophisticate mats with reverse bevels, decorated or covered with material such as cloth or paper.

Any mat should feature the art, not distract the viewer's eye from it. To accomplish this, the framer should select mats that are neutral to the color of the painting. Usually this is black, white or beige.

Colored mats may enhance a weak painting or complement a subject.
