Glossary

Frames seem to have a language of their own, full of notions that sound obscure to uninitiated people.

Our glossary is here to help you make your choice when selecting the perfect item for any project.

Please feel free to browse our glossary of framing terms.

Term Definition
Finishes Photo frames come in a variety of finishes, colours and materials. Finishes such as black or white are fairly simple to understand, while others are a little more tricky. Here's a selection of frame finishes: clear wood, chestnut, walnut, polished gold, etc.

Floating framesAlso called "Float frames" or "L-frames". The floating frames are an alternative to the canvas wrap. The canvas is carefully set amongst the deep frame, leaving a gap between the canvas and the frame. This is where the description "floating" gets its name.

French lineHand-painted line on the surface of matboard that acts as a decorative border.

GlassClear piece that covers the picture and should be kept clean for optimum viewing. Synthetic glass (thickness 1.2mm) guarantees a total artwork framing conservation. Perhaps you have a very bright room in which you will display your artwork, or you intend to hang the piece opposite a window or lamp. Anytime you think reflection may become a distraction from the enjoyment of your artwork or photographs, you may ask for synthetic glass that eliminates the reflection problem thanks to its non-glare UV-blocking surface. It is available in many different formats, from 21x29.7cm to 80x120cm.

HangerA device attached to the wall on which the frame is hung.
