Term Definition
PreservationIn framing, it is the careful maintenance and protection of subjects, using materials and procedures that will have no adverse effects on a piece of artwork and will protect the artwork from external damage.

Primary coloursRed, yellow and blue. No combination of other colors will yield a primary color; combinations of the primary colors yield all other colors.

ProfileThe cross section illustration which displays the height, width, and rabbet of the frame, giving a better understanding of its size.

RabbetThe rabbet is the recess on the back inside edge of the frame, into which the artwork fits. For most framing projects, any rabbet size is fine but when you are framing a very thick piece (like a canvas), be sure to choose one with a rabbet that will accommodate the thickness of the piece.

SerigraphA serigraph is a print created utilizing the silkscreen process. A silkscreen is a frame with silk or other fine fabric stretched tightly across it. An image is created directly on the fabric screen using a stencil to form the image and to block the areas where paint is not needed. Water-based or oil-based paint is squeezed or brushed through the screen, creating the image on the paper below.
